On January 8th, 2003, the Carolina Panthers signed Boar!  He lasted until the final cutdown, and played in the final preseason game against the Steelers, making one special teams tackle, but was cut prior to the start of the regular season.  Could've played in the Super Bowl!

Wow!  This high praise was on the official Admirals website recently.  The Dutch obvioulsy love Boar!

Boar Fun Fact: Okay, now this is just a bit strange.  There's somebody out there who manages to keep the USFL alive with a website where he plays mock games and keeps stats, standings, and records.  His league uses all the former USFL teams (the league was dissolved nearly twenty years ago) but updates the rosters with players whom I guess he feels would be good bets for current USFL players ie: former NFLers, those who've spent time on NFL or CFL rosters etc.  The USFL2K league can be found here.  Apparently, Kirk's one of the stars of this league.  Here's a recap of one of his best recent weeks:
SHOWBOATS 24 Federals 12 - Showboats RB Robert Cooper rushed for 87 yards and a touchdown and TE Kirk McMullen caught five passes for 89 yards and a fourth quarter touchdown as Memphis rebounded from last week's poor showing against New York/New Jersey by defeating the Washington Federals 24-12.
Trailing 12-10 late in the third quarter, the Showboats marched 87 yards for the game winning touchdown.  On the drive, Memphis reserve QB Phil Stambaugh (5-7, 128 yards) found McMullen for gains of 29 and 19 yards before RB Eric Flowers (12-43, TD) capped off the drive with a two yard run for a score to give the Showboats a 17-12.  After a Federals' punt, the Showboats (1-1) drove 44 yards for the clinching touchdown as QB John Kaleo (4-4, 47 yards, TD) hit McMullen in the back of end zone from 18 yards out to seal the Memphis victory.
In his first extended action, Washington QB Trent Dilfer was 6 of 14 for 58 yards.  However, he did manage to find WR Brian Greene (4-54, TD) for a 22 yard touchdown late in the second quarter.  Overall, the Federals offense struggled, amassing only 165 total yards as they finished the preseason 1-1.
Maulers 31 STALLIONS 20 - With several of their starters sitting out, the Maulers struggled early, falling behind early 14-3, but then they regrouped as WR Alex Bannister caught 10 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown as Pittsburgh stormed past the Birmingham Stallions 31-20 at Legion Field.

Boar Back Out Of Work: Now Easier To Hate The Bungles
I got an email from Kirk's older brother, Brad, the other day.  First time I've heard from him in a couple years.  It's always nice to hear from old friends.   Two days later, Kirk was released.  I'm never talking to Brad again.

MORE CUTS: On Monday morning, the Bengals cut three players to slice their roster to 73. Tight end Kirk McMullen, who played in seven games last year with two starts, got released, as did college free agents in wide receiver Michael Slater (Murray State) and fullback Harold Jackson (Temple). The club has to be down to 65 players by 4 p.m. Aug. 27

McMullen Pressed Into Service as Snapper

By Sean Keeler, Post staff reporter

No Brad St. Louis? No starting long-snapper for the rest of the
season? Is that a collective gulp we just heard from Bengals fans across
the tri-state? If it makes you feel better, neither of the Bengals who depend
the most on St. Louis seemed too concerned Thursday afternoon. It was just
before lunch when they got the news that a torn left groin muscle had landed the
snapper/tight end on injured reserve.
"It's just a different (bottom) in front of us when we're getting the ball," said
kicker Neil Rackers, who has made just 11 of 20 field-goal
attempts this season.

"Yeah, we should be all right," said punter Nick Harris, who
also serves as Rackers' holder.

For the first time since 1999, the Bengals are going to have to
find a new long-snapper during the season.

It was because of the follies two seasons ago - punter Will
Brice and kicker Doug Pelfrey were blocked twice each that year -
that St. Louis was drafted out of Southwest Missouri State in the
spring of 2000.

Now the onus falls on tight end Kirk McMullen, best known around
these parts for his shuttling between the active roster and practice squad.
Shortly after the news came down that an MRI exam on St. Louis's inner thigh
showed a tear, McMullen was elevated to No. 1 long-snapper.

"I always told him that one Saturday night, you're going to get
the call that you're my long-snapper,'' special teams coach Al Roberts said of
McMullen, 24.
"Well, my Saturday night call came on Thursday."

The 6-foot-4, 255-pound McMullen has taken reps behind St. Louis
at long-snapper since training camp. St. Louis has received
approximately half the practice long-snaps, with the rest divided between
McMullen, linebacker Steve Foley - the next in line - and defensive end
Justin Smith.

McMullen and practice-squad snapper Randy Chervier worked
extensively with Roberts and the kickers during skills sessions Thursday morning
and during a rainy Thursday afternoon session out on the Mehring Way practice
fields.

Harris, who had a punt blocked last Sunday against Tampa, gave
McMullen a solid review.

"He looked good in warm-ups," Harris said. "He was straight.
Had a good spiral."

St. Louis is the fourth Bengal tight end to go down with a
season-ending injury since the start of the regular season. Rookie Sean Brewer
was placed on injured reserve on Sept. 2 with a right groin strain; No. 2
tight end Marco Battaglia was reserved Nov. 17 with appendicitis; starter Tony
McGee was reserved Dec. 3 with a sprain in the medial collateral ligament
in his right knee.

"(Injuries) happen at all levels of football," LeBeau said.
"We seem to be getting them at the tight end (spot). And now we've got them
with a tight end who's also a snapper. That's called a double-whammy."

Using McMullen for snapping leaves H-back Nick Williams as the
only other active player who can serve as a tight end or "move"
back/H-back.

McMullen was listed on the depth chart as the No. 1 tight end as
recently as Wednesday. But, McMullen the snapper could take some offensive
plays away from McMullen the tight end because the Bengals don't want to see him
hurt.
"That's out of my control," said McMullen, who hasn't played
in a regular-season game since his final season at the University of
Pittsburgh in '99. "It's a great opportunity for whoever gets it. I hope I
get that opportunity, and I want to take full advantage of it if I get
it."

Long Snappers Try For Job

By Mark Curnutte -The Cincinnati Enquirer

With long snapper Brad St.Louis lost for the season because of a torn left groin, the Bengals auditioned replacement candidates Kirk McMullen and Randy Chevrier on Thursday.  McMullen, who also is listed as the Bengals' starting tight end, was long snapper in college at Pittsburgh. Chevrier, a rookie signed to the Bengals' practice squad Tuesday, was waived Nov.13 by Dallas after snapping in Games1-8.  The Bengals haven't decided who will get the job.  “If you asked me, I want to go with McMullen, because he knows my system,” special teams coach Al Roberts said. “The kid from Dallas is a powerful snapper, but I'll wait and see what the decision is later.”  Kicker Neil Rackers isn't worried about the change at long snapper.  “Kirk is ready to go. It will go well,” he said. “So it's not an issue. It's just a different butt in front of us when we get the ball. Different butt, same operation.”

Boar Fun Fact:  In high school, Kirk often passed time during drills by giggling and delivering a pinch known as a "bee sting" to teammates on the sidelines.

Battaglia shelved for season

BY GEOFF HOBSON

After undergoing an appendectomy Saturday, Bengals tight end Marco Battaglia is out for the rest of the season. Before Sunday's game, the Bengals put him on the reserve/non-football injury list, ending his sixth season in doubt because he's not signed for next year.

The club has signed tight end Kirk McMullen from the practice squad to take Battaglia’s spot. Battaglia, who has 13 catches for 118 yards this season, is going to miss the first game of his 88-game career after being stricken in the middle of the night.

Battaglia had one start this season and has played mainly in double tight-end sets. The Bengals are hoping their depth at running back and receiver can get them through his absence with McMullen and starter Tony McGee. Long snapper Brad St. Louis pretty much plays only on short yardage.
McMullen, a first-year player from Pittsburgh, has been with the Bengals since Dec. 26 of last year after getting cut by the Chiefs. He makes his NFL debut after playing in all four preseason games and had a 19-yard reception. He was waived Sept. 2, has been on the practice squad since Sept. 3, and signed a three-year deal Saturday.

Boar fun fact: Once, while playing football in my side yard, Kirk got into a fight with my buddy, Studd, and gave him a black eye.
